Swell was HUGE at times with consistent sets rolling in.
Wind was a bit too off shore and light to be comfortable. Made for some very scary moments when trying to get out thorugh the shorebreak. If you timed it wrong and met a decent set you could forget it..... turn around and head back in as there was no way you'l make it out.
It was a bit of a grovel and timing the waves on the way in was crucial, it was quite offshore and very light so you had to pretty much catch a well formed almost breaking wave, take a late drop and use the wave speed to get you around.
when/if you did catch one, the rides were pretty good. Swell was well formed and peeling most of the way, 3-4 turns before the big close out. some sellls were very big..... loads of fun but a little scary with not much wind.
a 5deg direction change or another 5-8knts and it would have been primo.
A couple of guys ended up going for a surf instead, a good option. But as the tide dropped to low the swell tends to get a bit confused and closes out all over the place. Mid tide at Lyall seems to be best.
